i don't want to be seen as a pretty thing;
it's the pretty things we're always breaking
halloween, alaska
halloween, alaska
beautiful, melodic electro-pop. this is to the love-cars what the postal service is to death cab. i bought this cd without having first heard all of the songs on it, so you know that i had high expectations; i am glad to say that the album lives up to them. the group members are a bit of an amalgam of love-cars and 12 rods, so all of you minnesotans, be proud of the twin cities music scene.
jane eyre
charlotte bronte
i read this in a christmas exchange with lea; she chose a book for me to read, and i chose a book for her to read. though i would have never chosen on my own to read this, it’s a good book, and was worth reading.
trees on 19
driving back to northfield today the trees surrounding highway 19 were frosted with snow, like so many browned and greyed old men and women. the light brown and soft white combines to create a soft, pinkish hue, even in the midday sun. the snow is deeper here than in madison, beautiful and tangible, an incarnation of “white christmas” and “there’s no place like home for the holidays” combined.
return of the king
long, but good, i think. lea and i discussed it, and feel that the writing could have been a bit better. also, i still think i like fellowship the best, of the trilogy. be that as it may, still a fun movie, and still very good.
clue
oh, the suspense.
american gods
what if god was one of us? just a slob like one of us? etc. pretty good, though it seems like it could have done more. my thanks to mr. a giesler for lending me the book.
take out the trash
i was taking out some cardboard to be recycled this evening, on my way to purchase some stamps. as i approached the recycling bins outside, i noticed for the first time a radio tower across the beltline from my apartment building. i think the reason i noticed it tonight was the light fog in the air - each pulse of the tower’s lights was like a very small lightning strike.
there are any number of lessons that could be taught from this. one might say that i have to take out any emotional trash (the cardboard) before i can communicate effectively (the stamps). or one might treat the fog as a metaphor for metaphors - its blurring and generalizing a method to make a message more noticable, accessible, and beautiful than it ever could be when stated directly.
or one could turn away from the moment and think on it no more.
shepherd’s pie
quick and easy to prepare; brown the ground beef, dump in the condensed creams of mushroom and celery and some mixed veggies, top with instant mashed potatoes. not too shabby, for all that. next time, though, i think i’ll use lamb, and mash my own potatoes, and use fresh veggies, etc, etc.
tacosagna
sometimes you take chances and they don’t work out as well as you hoped; i didn’t really care for this when i ate it last night. fortunately, it’s better after being reheated. it would be even better if i had any sour cream. i think that were i to make something like this again, i would try using tortillas instead of lasagna noodles. museum of science and industry
in chicago. this would have been more fun if i was about ten years younger, but it was still interesting. i prefer the art museums, i think.
