i don't want to be seen as a pretty thing;
it's the pretty things we're always breaking

a heartbreaking work of staggering genius

david eggers

hey, i actually finished a book, for the first time in a very long time. i also liked the book, though those with less patience for post-modern meta-conversation probably would not like it so much.

out of africa

it’s always good to see another best picture. lea is currently reading the book this is loosely based on. this definitely falls in the “epic” category of movies, and reminds me in many ways of nowhere in africa — or, rather, nowhere in africa reminds me of this movie, given that this movie predates it by a decade and a half.

the day after tomorrow

it’s always nice to see gyllenhaal — and this time in a big budget hollywood-summer-movie, no less. one problem i have with this movie is its overuse of the Inverse Hero Distance / Disaster Speed Effect. for example: a giant tidal wave is crashing over new york city, moving at seemingly upwards of a hundred miles per hour … but as it gets close to the protagonists, it slows to a crawl, to allow them to get to safety. this is of course standard fare for action movies, but they really ham it up in this one. anyway, this was pretty fun.

the sopranos, season 2

i am slowly watching through these, and just finished season 2 this weekend (i watched a lot of homicide and sopranos over the memorial day long weekend).

the missing

blanchett and jones both do a fine job, and this movie is good, but it lacks just a little too much of something (i’m not sure what), which keeps it from being great.

two notes

one: when cooking with peppers (in this case serrano), it is important to wash your hands both after and before going to the bathroom.

two: i just moved the site from dreamhost over to this linode project we’re working on (nonninja). stuff on this webpage might be broken. email me if it is.

super size me

almost makes me want to exercise. dear lord, am i a lazy lump.

van helsing

i thought it was fun. i didn’t have to think at all, and that was what i was looking for. on a side note, i was the asshole adult who told a posse of kids behind and to the right of us, who had not stopped loudly yammering since they walked in to the theater, to shut up about five minutes into the movie. surprisingly, they actually did quiet down, reserving their chatter to loud whispers.

stone creek

it’s official — we’re living in stone creek apartments as of july 1 this year. the new place is a two bed two bath loft, with in unit washer/dryer, a nice kitchen with a pantry, a big balcony, and an openable skylight. here’s the deal: you help us move in on june 26th, and we will provide you with pizza, beer, and a floor to sleep on. eh? eh?

geriatric menace

driving home today we were almost ran into by an old lady — she just started to change lanes right into me. i wouldn’t have even noticed until it was too late if lea hadn’t yelped, given that i was already a little bit ahead of her. luckily, because lea alerted me to problem i hit the brakes, and the woman finally noticed that the space she was about to move to was occupied.

sometimes people should stay off the road.
