i don't want to be seen as a pretty thing;
it's the pretty things we're always breaking

i heart huckabees

this movie was rather odd, but given that it’s an existential comedy, i’m surprised isn’t wasn’t even odder. the tagline tells the truth, too: this isn’t a comedy with existential overtones; it is explicitly about existentialism. i liked it.

barrel fever

david sedaris

i can’t say i liked this book as much as sedaris’ others. that being said, it’s not bad, and the story within it from which the collection draws its name is fantastic, and is probably my favorite single piece of his.

kinsey

this is pretty easily the most graphic/explicit english-language film i’ve ever seen. that’s not necessarily a bad thing; it’s just a little intense, and not exactly what i was expecting.

better than the first, methinks: silly yet smart, funny, and fun.

oh my god, it burns

at one point during my junior year at carleton i wound up with the butt end of a handle of karkov. i refused to drink the stuff on “it comes in plastic” principle, and eventually managed to spread it around on some drunk friends in my room watching training day one night. it seems that, had i ran the vile stuff through my brita, it would have been a much more pleasant night for all involved.

briceless

i will spare you all a subpar mastercard knockoff.

i am, of course, immeasurably happy when my friends get jobs, especially in this happy-go-lucky economy we’re living in (for another four years), and let me first say that i am happy for said friends when they get said jobs. sadly, there are downsides as well … for me. brice got a job at speakeasy, which means that he is no longer haunting the aetherwaves (i.e. AIM) from those critical hours of 9-4 CST, the middle hours of my workday. i no longer have an outlet for my pitchfork-reactionism and snarky pop culture critique. and if i want to discuss how much more intriguing a particularly inaccessible album is after a few full listens, well, i’m S.O.L.. for example, just today, i was thrilled to learn about a love-cars concert, and amused by a review of a bjork single, but had no one to talk to about either of them.

rest in peace, brice-during-the-day. we (the royal we) will miss you. and, again, congratulations.

funny, if not great. i personally get a big kick out of christopher walken, even if he does always play a quirky character (this time, a quirky vegetarian cop, as opposed to a quirky criminal).

some nerd terms for you

sqlz : a.k.a. “SQL skills.” the ability to work adroitly with sql. the z is because you’re a hacker. add an extra z or two if performing especially dangerous stunts with your skillz.

awfulsome : something that is at once awful and awesome. bonus points come from the fact that the word fulsome is contained within this term.

produrgatory : or “durg” for short; a.k.a work; a productivity purgatory. whether this means you are unable to be productive or you are in purgatory because you are forced to be “productive” is up to you.
